Some seemingly natural household items are not necessary for some people. Yoko Ogasawara, a 74-year-old Japanese artist, is a resident of the family. She now lives in the elderly community and gives herself a daily living fee of 1,000 yen (about NT$220). In her house, she lacks regular beds, pillows, bath towels and other things that most families have. It’s not that she can’t afford it, but she has reasons.

Ogasawara said that she does not have items that ordinary families should have for granted. For example, even though there is a bedroom, there is no ordinary bed, pillow and bed. There is no wallet under the kitchen sink, there is no carpet in the living room, and there is no wallet after taking a shower.

Often people may be curious about how to sleep without a bed? Ogasawara admitted that it was because he "accidentally" the original bed was removed, but then he deliberately refused to buy new ones. She said that when she was sorting out her hometown, she found out that several sets of customers used quilts, so she picked a few clean ones for home use, and put them in the wall first. When she really wanted to take them out for use, she was surprised, "Why are there only quilts but no bed?"

In the past, she lived in a larger house, and there was a high wooden platform in the living room to increase the sense of space. After moving, the platform did not have a suitable placement, so she simply used it as a bed. The length of the platform was just similar to her height, so she eliminated the need to buy a new bed.

As for the pillows, they are replaced by towels, because generally the pillows on the market are too high for her, which makes her feel uncomfortable. She folded the towel into four equal parts and then folded it in half. This height was just right, and this simple alternative was more suitable.

She said that after taking a shower, she had enough towels (face towels) to use; as for wiping her feet, she did not use the bathroom to absorb water, but instead prepared a small towel that was quickly drying instead.

Is bath towel really necessary?

Regarding the necessity of bath towels, it will often become a topic. Ogasawara admitted that after taking a shower, she could feel the comfort of soft wrapping. This is an incomparable enjoyment for a small towel; but she thought she was small, but in fact, using a small towel was enough. The biggest reason for choosing not to use a bath towel is the cumbersomeness of washing.

She has been used to washing clothes for several geniuses, and the bath towel is larger, which not only occupies space when hanging, but also increases the burden of overall washing. In addition, even if used after bathing, the bath towel will still be stained with a trace of sebum, so it needs to be cleaned frequently. I can’t use bath towels at a hotel like I stay in a hotel, and there is limited room for drying, so I simply don’t need it.
