Wu Chengwen, chairman of the National Science Council, said that Taiwan has advantages in artificial intelligence (AI). At the APEC meeting on the 30th, he promised all member economies that Taiwan would not exclusively enjoy its semiconductor strength, but would share it with friendly economies that recognize Taiwan. He mentioned that he did feel that many countries were gradually willing to contact Taiwan, and Taiwan's industrial strength was also a factor.
The host country of the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference (APEC) is South Korea. The APEC Annual Ministerial Meeting (AMM) will be held on October 29 and 30. Taiwan is represented by Yang Jenny, the general negotiator of the Economic and Trade Negotiation Office, and Wu Chengwen, the chairman of the National Science Council.
Wu Chengwen said at the double minister press conference on the evening of the 30th that from the morning to the afternoon of the 30th meeting, all economies were concerned about AI, and almost all reports mentioned AI, because AI has an impact on the world's economy and innovation, and everyone has to care about it. AI must be used to assist the country, society, economy and technological development.
Wu Chengwen said that Taiwan has customers from all over the world in the fields of semiconductors, cloud, data centers, equipment, etc. This is a kind of publicity for Taiwan's strength and makes it clear to the outside world that Taiwan is indeed very strong in the fields of semiconductors and AI hardware. Because of this, Taiwan hopes to use APEC to make all economies feel that Taiwan is friendly, hopes to make friends, and hopes to prosper with everyone. This is also the purpose of President Lai Ching-te sending him to assist Jenny Yang.
"Taiwan does not want to develop industries behind closed doors." Wu Chengwen emphasized that Taiwan is willing to help its friends through its strengths. From a diplomatic perspective, it can indeed be felt that many countries are gradually willing to contact Taiwan.
At the first session of the 2025 APEC Ministerial Annual Meeting, "Innovation and Prosperity," Wu Chengwen gave a speech and pointed out two major goals. First, use Taiwan's complete semiconductor industry ecosystem to build a resilient and trustworthy global supply chain with partners to promote economic development.
Secondly, in the face of the AI wave, Taiwan is committed to building an open and mutually beneficial AI innovation ecosystem and market, from chips, algorithms to terminal smart applications, to jointly develop innovative smart systems. For example, Taiwan’s mature medical care system is using AI to move toward comprehensive intelligence. It hopes to deepen cooperation with APEC partners to jointly create a resilient supply chain and an inclusive AI environment, and jointly create shared prosperity and a sustainable future for the region.
Wu Chengwen emphasized at the press conference that Taiwan can assist many countries around the world and play the role of a catalyst and think tank, using its national power to assist the development of many countries around the world.
